Northern Shoveler: (Anas clypeata) These birds get their name from their large spatulate/shovel type bill. The bill has well developed lamellae along the edges and these provide the Shoveler with an exceptionally efficient feeding tool. Their habitats are inland shallow muddy lakes and marshlands, and the shallow margins of larger lakes. They feed on small crustaceans, mollusks, insects and larvae, also seeds and plant stems, sieved from the surface water or from semi-liquid mud with a sweeping action of the bill and by prolonged up-ending. |
